The Mathematics of Happiness: Why (a+b)2 Can Change Your Life
We all
studied mathematics in school.
Some of
us loved it.
Some of
us survived it.
And some
of us are still emotionally recovering from it.
Recently,
I realized that one of the formulas we memorized just to pass an examination
may actually contain a beautiful lesson about life and happiness.
Remember this? (a+b)2 = a2 + b2 + 2ab
At
school, we simply expanded it, solved the problem, and prayed that the next
question would be easier.
But what
if we apply this formula to happiness?
Let us
assume:
A = You
B =
Everything that adds meaning and joy to your life.
Then: (You + Life) ² = You² + Life² + 2(You × Life)
Now,
before you close this article thinking, "Oh no, not mathematics again!”
stay with me.
The
interesting part is not A² or B².
The magic
is in: 2AB
A²: You Must First Be Happy With Yourself
Imagine a
person who has a great job, a big house, a luxury car, expensive gadgets and
5,000 followers on social media.
But every
morning, the person looks in the mirror and thinks:
"What
is wrong with my life?"
The
problem is not always with B.
Sometimes,
A itself needs attention.
Your
relationship with yourself matters.
Your
health matters.
Your
peace of mind matters.
Your
ability to laugh at your own mistakes matters.
Because
if A is constantly negative, even a very attractive B may not
solve the equation.
You
cannot expect your spouse, children, friends, boss, dog, salary, vacation or
Wi-Fi connection to take complete responsibility for your happiness.
That
relationship is already complicated.
B²: Life Has Many Ingredients
Now let
us look at B.
What does
life give us?
- Family
- Friends
- Career
- Money
- Health
- Relationships
- Hobbies
- Food
- Travel
- Purpose
- Music
- Spirituality
- A good cup of tea or coffee
For some
people, happiness is sitting on a beach.
For
others, happiness is sitting at home when nobody asks them, "What are
you planning for the future?"
We all
have different values.
That is
why there is no universal B.
Your
happiness package may not look like mine.
And
thankfully, happiness is not available only in the premium version.
But Wait… Where Does the
Real Happiness Come From?
Here
comes the hero of our formula.
2AB — The Connection Between You and Everything
Around You
This is
the part we often forget.
You may
have:
- A wonderful family
- A successful career
- Good health
- Enough money
- Amazing friends
- A comfortable home
But if
you don't connect with them, experience them or appreciate them…
Your 2AB
becomes very small.
Think
about it.
You may
own an expensive phone but never call your parents.
You may
have good friends but be too busy to meet them.
You may
earn enough money but never have time to enjoy life.
You may
have a beautiful house but no one with whom to share a laugh.
You may
have 10,000 photographs but very few memories.
In
mathematics, 2AB is just a term.
In life,
it may be the relationship, connection and involvement that gives
meaning to everything else.
The Happiness Collaterals
Therefore,
perhaps happiness is not simply about having things.
It is
about the combination of several collaterals:
Happiness = Self + Relationships + Health + Purpose
+ Gratitude + Experiences + Contribution + Peace
But there
is one important condition.
These
things should not merely exist in your life.
You
should engage with them.
A gym
membership does not automatically produce fitness.
Buying
books does not automatically produce wisdom.
Having
friends on social media does not automatically produce friendship.
And
downloading a meditation app does not automatically make you peaceful.
Otherwise,
I would have become a fitness model simply by owning running shoes.
The Danger of Ignoring 2AB
Many of
us spend our lives increasing B.
More
money.
More
achievements.
More
followers.
More
properties.
More
qualifications.
More
certificates.
More
everything.
But
somewhere in the process, we forget to improve the relationship between A
and B.
We become
so busy building a life that we forget to live it.
We keep
postponing happiness.
"I
will be happy when I get the promotion."
"I
will be happy when I buy a house."
"I
will be happy when my children settle."
"I
will be happy when I retire."
The
problem is that by the time all the conditions are satisfied, we may have
forgotten how to be happy.
Happiness
is not always waiting at the next destination.
Sometimes,
it is sitting beside us while we are busy checking Google Maps.
So, What Is the Formula for
a Happy Life?
Maybe we
can rewrite it like this:
(Self + Life)² = Self Care² + Life’s Blessings² +
2(Connection × Appreciation)
The first
part is about taking care of yourself.
The
second part is about valuing what life offers you.
And the
most important part the 2AB is about:
- Connecting with people.
- Enjoying small moments.
- Appreciating what you
already have.
- Being present.
- Giving time.
- Receiving love.
- Creating memories.
- Laughing more often.
- And occasionally ignoring
your phone without developing withdrawal symptoms.
Because
happiness is rarely found in isolation.
It grows
when you connect with life.
