"Knowing When Enough is Enough: The Power of Contentment and Letting Go"
This article describes an actual incident that happened in one of the episodes of the well-known television program Kaun Banega Crorepati. In a recent episode, Neeraj Saxena, who ranked first in the Fastest Finger round, took the hot seat. He sat there calmly no screaming, no dancing, no tears, no hugging Amitabh. He is a scientist, holds a PhD, and is the Pro- Vice Chancellor of a university in Kolkata. He had a privilege to worked with Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
Neeraj began the game confidently, using the audience poll once but regaining the lifeline thanks to his double-dip power. He answered each question smoothly, and his intelligence was striking. He won ₹3.2 lakhs and an equivalent bonus before the break.
After the break, Amitabh started introducing the next question: “Alright, Doctor, now the eleventh question is coming up… Here it is…” But just then, Neeraj spoke up, “Sir, I would like to quit.” Amitabh was surprised. A contestant playing so well, with three lifelines still left and a clear path to ₹1 crore, wanted to quit?
Neeraj replied calmly, “There are other contestants waiting, and they are younger than I am. They deserve a chance too. Besides, I have already won a good amount. I feel what I have is enough. I don’t need more.”
Amitabh was speechless. The entire studio fell silent for a moment. Then everyone stood up and gave him a long round of applause. Amitabh said, “There is so much to learn from you today. It’s rare to meet someone so humble.”
Honestly, despite having such a huge opportunity, Neeraj’s decision to step back and allow others to play, while being content with what he had, is something I’ve never witnessed before. In my heart, I saluted him.
Today, people often chase money, power endlessly. No matter how much they earn, they are never satisfied. Greed never diminishes. In this pursuit, people lose their family time, sleep, peace, love, and friendships. But during times like these, people like Dr. Neeraj Saxena remind us of valuable lessons. In this age, encountering someone who is satisfied with less is a rare and precious sight.
After Neeraj quit, a young girl came to the hot seat. She shared her story: “My father threw us out because we are three daughters. We live in an ashram now…” I realized that if Neeraj hadn’t quit, this girl would not have had the chance to play. His sacrifice gave her an opportunity to earn some money. In today’s world, people don’t even want to part with a single penny from their inheritance. But this was an exceptional case.
When your needs are met, it’s important to know when to stop and give others a chance. Letting go of selfishness leads to collective happiness.
It was such a wonderful sensation to finish reading this article.
The lessons we learned from the entire episode:Here are six lessons we can learn from Dr. Neeraj Saxena’s remarkable choice on Kaun Banega Crorepati:

ReplyDeleteAs I comprehend this, I recall a moment from my own life. A few years back, I was part of a group competing for a scholarship that could make a significant difference in each of our lives. After the final round, one participant withdrew because they had recently received another scholarship and felt someone else might need it more. This act of selflessness struck me deeply. Not only did it create an opportunity for someone else, but it also reminded everyone in the room of the power of generosity and perspective.
ReplyDeleteDr. Saxena’s actions teach us the beauty of finding happiness in "enough" and the joy that comes from helping others succeed. In a world that often celebrates personal achievements, his choice shows how powerful a single selfless act can be. His example reminds us that true richness isn’t in having more, but in knowing when to stop, lift others up, and celebrate together.
